Group Descriptions - Nanaimo Riptides

National (14 years old & over)

National Group (14 years old & over)

Swimmers in this group have chosen swimming as their primary sport and are dedicated to pursuit of excellence. Athletes in this group will have the opportunity to be involved in decision-making for their training and competition, and will be asked to be accountable for those decisions.  Swimmers in this group are required to attend all provincial and SNC level meets, training camps and dryland activities set by the Head Coach. 

Performance Goals:

●     Qualify for Canadian Senior Nationals

●     Final at Canadian Junior Nationals

●     Working towards a university scholarship

Entrance Requirements:

●     14 years or older

●     85% attendance of practices

●     Qualified ‘Western Canadian’ Standard

●     Interview with the Head Coach prior to acceptance into the program

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity, sportsmanship and professionalism

Required Equipment:

●     Team shirt, team cap, pull buoy, fins, snorkel, goggles & water bottle


Provincial (13 years old & over)

Provincial Group (13 years old & over)

Swimmers in this group have chosen swimming as their primary sport and are dedicated to pursuit of excellence. Gold (13 - 15 years old)

Gold Group (13-15 years old)

Swimmers in this group have chosen swimming as their primary sport and are committed to sporting lifestyle. Athletes in this group will have the opportunity to be involved in decision-making for their training and competition, and will be asked to be accountable for those decisions.  Swim-up opportunities with the Provincial group will be available to highly devoted and high performing athletes.  Swimmers in this group are expected to compete in all qualified championship (VIR, Provincial and National level) meets and attend all swim meets outlined by the coaching staff.

●     Final at Provincial Championship meets

●     Qualify for National level meet

●     80% attendance of practices

●     Tier 2 qualified

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity, sportsmanship and professionalism

Silver (11 - 14 years old)

Silver Group (11-14 years old)

This is a competitive group for swimmers who have chosen swimming as their primary sport.  The focus of the group is learning to train, mastering skill technique, and exposing the swimmer to expanding aspects of competitive swimming and the sporting lifestyle. Swimmers in this group are expected to compete in all qualified championship (VIR, Provincial and National level) meets and attend all swim meet outlined by the coaching staff. 

Performance Goals:

●    Achieve a provincial championship time standard   

  • Finals at Vancouver Island Championships

Entrance Requirements:

●     11-14 years or old

●     80% attendance of practices

●     VIR qualified

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity, sportsmanship and professionalism

Required Equipment:

●     Team shirt, team cap, pull buoy, fins, snorkel, goggles & water bottle


Bronze (10 - 13 years old)

Bronze Group (10-13 years old)

This is a competitive group.  Swimmers in this group should be involved in other activities on non-swimming days. Continued skill development while developing and understanding of swim workout design and correctly executing sets will be the primary objective of this group. Swimmers in this group are expected to compete in all qualified championship (VIR, Provincial and National level) meets and attend all swim meet outlined by the coaching staff. 

Performance Goals:

  • Qualify for Provincial Championships
  • Finals at Vancouver Island Championships
  • Develop an understanding of swimming sets/workouts and increase ability to work independently
  • Ability to swim all events

Entrance Requirements:

  • 10-13 years or old
  • 75% attendance of practices
  • Committed to supporting an environment of positivity and sportsmanship

Yellow (9 - 12 years old)

Yellow Group (9-12 years old)

This is a competitive group.  The principal focus of the Yellow group is to introduce swimmers to the skills required to swim at an elite level.  Participants in this group should be involved in other activities on non-swimming days.  The focus of this group is to fine tune stroke technique and prepare swimmers to train at a higher level.  Swimmers must attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Performance Goals:

●     Provincial Championship time standard

●     Perform all strokes, starts & turns competently

Entrance Requirements:

●     Must be able to complete a 200m Individual Medley & 200m Freestyle in accordance with SNC rules.

●     Achieved a ‘VIR’ Time Standard

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity and sportsmanship

Required Equipment:

●     Team shirt, team cap, pull buoy, fins, goggles, water bottle & proper suit (no bikinis or board shorts)


Blue (10 years old & under)

Blue Group (10 & under)

This is a competitive group for swimmers 10 & under who wish to continue on with the Riptides long-term development plan. Swimmers will also be introduced to the training skills needed to increase their endurance and enhance their ability to swim distance freestyle.  Swimmers in this group must attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Performance Goals:

  • Achieve a ‘VIR’ Time standard
  • 200 IM

Entrance Requirements:

      ●     Must be able to complete a 100m Individual Medley in accordance with SNC rules and complete 200m freestyle

Required Equipment:

      ●     Team shirt, team cap, goggles, water bottle & proper suit (no bikinis or board shorts)


Green (10 years old & under)

Green Group (10 & under)

Skill Refinement

Gain knowledge and confidence as a swimmer while enhancing the swimming skills learned in I Can Swim Stages 1 to 3.

This is a competitive group designed to introduce swimmers to competitive swimming.  Developing skills in all four strokes will be the primary focus in this group and swimmers are now able to attend both club and regional level swim meets.   Swimmers must attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Entrance Requirements:

  • Willing to listen and take directions from coaches and can function within a group structure
  • The desire to compete regional level swim meets
  • Completion of ICS stage 3 or an equivalent ability
  • Comfortable swimming 100 meters deep end of NAC  

Skills learned:

  • Stroke drills – focus on skill refinement and stroke enhancement
  • Endurance building
  • Goal setting
  • Advanced diving skills

Required Equipment:

●     Team shirt, team cap, goggles, water bottle & proper suit (no bikinis or board shorts)
