Group Descriptions - Nanaimo Riptides

National (14 years old & over)

National Group (14 years old & over)

This is a competitive group for highly motivated and committed swimmers 14 years and older who have chosen swimming as their primary activity.  Swimmers in this group are required to attend all provincial and SNC level meets, training camps and dryland activities set by the Head Coach.  Workouts will be appropriate for age and ability of the athlete.

Performance Goals:

●     Qualify for Canadian Senior Nationals

●     Final at Canadian Junior Nationals

●     Working towards a university scholarship

 

Entrance Requirements:

●     14 years or older

●     85% attendance of practices

●     Qualified ‘Western Canadian’ Standard or “on-track”

●     Interview with the Head Coach prior to acceptance into the program

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity, sportsmanship and professionalism

*The head coach reserves the right to accept swimmers into the National program that have met some, but not all of the above criteria.

Required Equipment:

●     Team shirt, team cap, pull buoy, fins, snorkel, goggles & water bottle


Provincial (13 years old & over)

Provincial Group (13 years old & over)

This program is for motivated and committed swimmers 13 years and older who have chosen swimming as their primary activity.  Swimmers in the provincial group are required to compete in all provincial meets, training camps and dryland activities set out by the Head Coach.

●     Qualify for Canadian Junior Nationals

Gold (13 - 16 years old)

Gold Group (13-15 years old)

Athletes in this group will have the opportunity to be involved in decision-making for their training and competition, and will be asked to be accountable for those decisions.  Swim-up opportunities with the Provincial group will be available to highly devoted and high performing athletes.  Swimmers in this group are expected to attend all meet outlined by the coaching staff and to compete in all qualified championship meets (VIR’s, ‘AA’s, ‘AAA’s and Nationals) that they qualify for.

 Swimmers in the Gold group are required to compete in all provincial meets and dryland activities set out by the Group Coach

●     Final at Provincial Championship meets

●     Qualify for Canadian Age Group Nationals

●     80% attendance of practices

●     Qualified ‘AAA’ (2 events) or “on-track”

Silver (11 - 14 years old)

Silver Group (11-14 years old)

This is a competitive group.  Swimmers in this group should be involved in other activities on non-swimming days.  Developing an understanding of swim workout design and correctly executing sets is the primary objective of this group.  Swimmers in this group are expected to attend all meet outlined by the coaching staff and to compete in all qualified championship meets (VIR’s, ‘AA’s, ‘AAA’s and Nationals) that they qualify for.

Performance Goals:

●     Achieve a provincial ‘AAA’ time

Entrance Requirements:

●     11-14 years or old

●     80% attendance of practices

●     Achieved ‘AA’ Time Standard or “on-track”

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity, sportsmanship and professionalism

Bronze (11 - 14 years old)

Bronze Group (11-14 years old)

This is a competitive group.  Swimmers in this group should be involved in other activities on non-swimming days. Swimmers in this group are expected to attend all swim meet outlined by the coaching staff and to compete in all qualified championship meets (VIR’s, ‘AA’s, ‘AAA’s and Nationals) that they qualify for.

Platinum (11 years old & over)

Platinum Group (11 & over)

This is a competitive group.  The principal focus of the Platinum group is to provide participants the opportunity to compete in the sport, while not maintaining swimming as a primary sport.  Swimmers in this group are expected to attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Performance Goals:

●     Perform all strokes, starts and turns competently

Entrance Requirements:

●     11 years old

●     Must be able to complete a 200m Individual Medley & 200m Freestyle in accordance with SNC rules

●     Achieved an ‘A’ Time Standard “or on track”

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity and sportsmanship

Required Equipment:

●     Team shirt, team cap, pull buoy, fins, goggles, water bottle & proper suit (no bikinis or board shorts)


Yellow (9 - 12 years old)

Yellow Group (10-12 years old)

This is a competitive group.  The principal focus of the Yellow group is to introduce swimmers to the skills required to swim at an elite level.  Participants in this group should be involved in other activities on non-swimming days.  The focus of this group is to fine tune stroke technique and prepare swimmers to train at a higher level.  Swimmers must attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Performance Goals:

●     Provincial ‘AA’  time standard

●     Perform all strokes, starts & turns competently

Entrance Requirements:

●     Must be able to complete a 200m Individual Medley & 200m Freestyle in accordance with SNC rules.

●     Achieved a ‘VIR’ Time Standard or “on-track”

●     Committed to supporting an environment of positivity and sportsmanship

Blue (10 years old & under)

Blue Group (10 & under)

This is a competitive group for swimmers 10 & under who wish to continue on with the Riptides long-term development plan.  Swimmers will also be introduced to the training skills needed to increase their endurance and enhance their ability to swim distance freestyle.  Swimmers in this group must attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Performance Goals:

●     Must be able to complete a 100m Individual Medley in accordance with SNC rules and complete 200m freestyle

*The head coach reserves the right to move swimmers in and out of this group at his discretion.

Green (10 years old & under)

Green Group (10 & under)

Skill Refinement

Gain knowledge and confidence as a swimmer while enhancing the swimming skills learned in I Can Swim Stages 1 to 3.

This is a competitive group designed to introduce swimmers to competitive swimming.  Developing skills in all four strokes will be the primary focus in this group and swimmers are now able to attend both club and regional level swim meets.   Swimmers must attend one away meet before Christmas, one away meet between Christmas and spring break, one away meet after spring break and all meets hosted by Riptides.

Entrance Requirements:
